02 / THE SETUP PATH

Xbox Dev Mode installation

Prepare a Series X or Series S, a Windows PC for USB permissions, a USB drive and your Microsoft account. Keep the PC able to reach the console on the local network. Read the official GitHub Releases instructions.

01

Register and activate Xbox Dev Mode

Microsoft’s developer account guide describes free registration through its new onboarding flow, including individual ID and selfie verification. Start at the Store developer entry linked there; direct Partner Center, Xbox or Visual Studio entry can show the legacy flow. Resolve a fee or region-specific registration issue with Microsoft before continuing.

  1. Install Xbox Dev Mode from the console’s Store, launch it and note the activation code.
  2. Use the device activation page linked in Microsoft’s activation guide. Sign in with your fully registered developer account and enter the console’s code.
  3. Choose Switch and restart on the console. The next screen should be Dev Home.

Activation fails? Check the account and activation route.

02

Connect your PC to Xbox Device Portal

  1. In Dev Home → Home → Remote Access, open Remote Access Settings and enable Xbox Device Portal.
  2. Set and save the Portal username and password under Authentication.
  3. Open the current Remote Access URL shown on the console in your PC’s browser, then sign in with those credentials.

Microsoft documents a certificate warning for this local connection. Confirm that the address belongs to your console before proceeding. Microsoft Device Portal instructions.

Portal connection or sign-in fails?

03

Install the Xbox package and both dependencies

Open the official GitHub Releases page for xbox-1.1.26291.1739 and obtain its Xbox package. Unzip it on the PC. In Device Portal choose Add, select the .msix and include both files in the Dependencies folder.

Complete installation and check that KytyPS5 appears among the installed apps. Keep the extracted package together while checking dependencies.

Package installation fails?

04

Set the app type to Game

In Dev Home, set KytyPS5’s app type to Game, as the release instructs. The UWP guide specifies this for the larger memory budget. Confirm that Game is selected before launching.

Wrong type or memory trouble?

05

Prepare the NTFS USB games folder

The build’s UWP guide specifies an NTFS USB drive. On a Windows PC, open the game folder’s Properties → Security → Edit → Add, enter ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES, then grant Read & execute. This permits UWP apps to read it; the guide also describes a narrower app-package SID option.

Back up the drive before formatting: formatting erases its contents. Apply read permissions to the intended games folder and follow the guide’s scope rather than changing unrelated folders.

Games folder cannot be read?

06

Scan the folder and check the first launch

Connect the USB drive to the Xbox and choose Media. The UWP guide identifies the USB drive as E: in Dev Mode. In KytyPS5 settings add the games folder, then press Y in the launcher to rescan. The UWP guide describes folders containing eboot.bin and .zar archives as library inputs.

You should see discovered titles in the launcher. Select a title and press A to start it, then record its last visible screen and any error. Keep the console model, app tag and game version with the result.

Launch stops or graphics look wrong?

03 / WHEN SOMETHING STOPS

Common problems, first checks.

Change one item at a time.
Keep the exact error message.

Account or console activation fails

Confirm registration is complete, then use the Xbox device activation route linked by Microsoft. Check the code shown by the console and your account’s onboarding flow before retrying. Return to account setup.

Device Portal will not open or sign in

Check that Portal is enabled and use the current address shown in Dev Home. For authentication, use the username and password saved in Remote Access Settings. Return to Portal setup.

The package will not install

Match the Xbox release tag, its .msix and both extracted dependencies. Retain the exact Portal error and confirm the installed app is set to Game in Dev Home. Return to package installation.

The app is not set to Game

Return to Dev Home and change KytyPS5’s type to Game. Include that setting with any memory-related error. Return to the app-type step.

A game does not appear in the library

Check the selected folder, NTFS filesystem and UWP read permissions, then rescan with Y. Compare the folder contents with the library input formats in the UWP guide. Return to USB preparation.

A game stops or renders incorrectly

Check the build’s known Xbox limits. The documented rendering cases include black speckles from some per-vertex shader values and a stop when a shader writes a multisampled storage image. Record the scene, console model and tag when comparing reports. Return to the first-launch check.

04 / QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Is the PS5 emulator running on Xbox available as a package?

Yes. The installation route uses the developer’s Xbox release package, its .msix and supplied dependencies. The official release page is the file source.

Do I need Xbox Dev Mode?

Yes. The packaged Xbox release targets Series X|S in Developer Mode. Your normal retail games and apps run in Retail Mode; in Dev Home use Leave Dev Mode to return, then the Xbox Dev Mode app to switch back.

What should I include in a problem report?

A useful report of PS5 games running on Xbox hardware includes the build tag, console, game version, exact error and point reached. A timestamped Xbox video or a detailed run log makes the result easier to evaluate. Send a source or correction.

Does the September demonstration use the October 18 build?

The demonstration does not identify its exact build. The installation guide follows xbox-1.1.26291.1739, released October 18, 2026; the table retains the September 8 evidence date.

Is KytyPS5 the project sometimes called PS5X?

Yes. This guide uses the upstream repository name, KytyPS5, and links to its Xbox release.
